Graded FR 1.5 by PSA, the only specimen of this rare Hall of Fame collectible validated by that company. The T204 Ramly inserts of 1909 are among the scarcest and most magnificent of all tobacco cards. Within the issue, there is a "square frame" sub-set that is even more storied and elusive than the series' standard oval counterparts. The offered "square frame" example pictures Jesse C. Burkett. The card's caption identifies Burkett as "Manager Worcester Club"; Burkett was the owner as well as the field leader for that minor league squad, and he also served as a big league coach (under John McGraw) and later led a collegiate team at Holy Cross. The most riveting statistic in his baseball career, however, is the fact that Burkett was credited with batting over .400 three times before the turn of the 20th Century. (Subsequent tinkering with the record-keeping in modern times -- which reduced Burkett's 1899 average to .396 -- has left the Cooperstown enshrinee's stature undiminished among students of the game.)
This rarity delivers admirable eye appeal. Honest corner wear does not approach the obverse's extravagant border framing, and the piece's blank back is unmarked. A horizontal crease is visible from both front and back perspectives, but this fault is unobtrusive in character and does not impair the facial portion of the detailed player likeness. The corners at the left side concede tiny creases at their outermost tips -- again, not affecting the card's design -- and a small number of additional, essentially peripheral wrinkles require intense concentration to discern. There are only a scant few "square" Ramlys known in the hobby, and quality specimens are virtually nonexistent. A unique and very satisfying potential addition to a T204 Ramly set, in Fair condition.
