These fascinating postcards were produced as promotional pieces for the Brush Motor Company, circa 1910. Each card shows a well-dressed Detroit Tigers ballplayer (or two) posing on or near one of the company's runabout vehicles; catchy poems about the pictured players complete the obverse presentations. Although the endorsement of the local diamond heroes must have garnered interest in the innovative cars, the Brush venture ended in 1913 with the demise of the company. The 3-1/2" x 5-1/2" cards are impossibly scarce -- made doubly so in consideration of their crossover appeal among automotive enthusiasts.
Each card has been graded by SGC. No more than two specimens of any of these entries have been validated by that service, and this is the only full set that can be constructed from the existing SGC census. The items boast clear and nicely developed black-and-white images throughout, and all of the cards' backs are free from signs of postal use or writing of any kind. The set includes: Graded SGC 70 EX+ 5.5: 1 card, Bill Coughlin; SGC 60 EX 5: 6 cards w/Ty Cobb, Bill Donovan, Hughie Jennings/Hands On Steering Wheel, George Mullin, Charlie Schmidt and Ira Thomas; SGC 50 VG/EX 4: 2 cards w/Hughie Jennings/Hands In Air and Schaefer/O'Leary; SGC 40 VG 3: 1 card, Marty McIntyre.
Here's the hobby's finest representation of this wonderful tie-in effort, a production that showcases two of Americans' greatest passions: baseball and automobiles!
