Here is a group of the rarest cards in our industry, all featuring formative incarnations of imagery that originated with Goudey Gum Co. in 1933. These are three matching pairs of cards which, if united, would provide the finished front illustrations for a highly coveted trio of ‘33 Goudey Hall of Famer depictions. (These portrayals were included in Goudey’s “Big League Gum” issue in the U.S., as well as the company’s World Wide Gum Canadian counterpart.) Each pair is comprised of one card that has been rendered with the light blue, yellow and red printing plates, and is accompanied by a second card that has only been printed with the dark blue final overlay image -- the latter replicating the original artist's sketch most closely. The tri-color cards are without player names (and one is without the copyright logo). Further, the color cards are a bit subdued and charmingly surrealistic in their hues, fascinating in their own right but visibly awaiting the accented contrast provided by the blue overlay.

 
Each card has been encapsulated and assessed “Authentic” by SGC. Includes: SGC Authentic: 6 cards w/#’s 144 Babe Ruth/Color, 144 Babe Ruth/Blue, 154 Jimmy Foxx/Color, 154 Jimmy Foxx/Blue, 160 Lou Gehrig/Color and 160 Lou Gehrig/Blue. These pieces were responsibly hand-cut to approximate fully dimensioned, as-issued cards. The blue cards have toned a bit with time (slightly to mildly), yet they retain sharp, captivating detail: they project crispness in imagery not accomplished in the commercial issue. All are blank-backed with clean surfaces throughout, the one exception being a small, stray smudge on the obverse of the Foxx/Blue example. Overall EX/MT or finer appearance. These are outstanding proof pieces from a revered issue that is extremely desirable in its finished form, and simply compelling when viewed in this pre-production mode.
