In 1888, the National League’s New York Giants competed against the American Association’s St. Louis Browns for the world championship of baseball: the teams battled in a post-season series, with the coveted Dauvray Cup at stake. (The cup was the brainchild of Helen Dauvray, a prominent actress and the wife of John Montgomery Ward, in 1887. A team had to win the elaborate Tiffany silver cup in three consecutive post-season series to retire it.) In 1888, the post-season series was shortened to 10 games from the 17-game marathon of 1887. Four games each were played at New York and St. Louis, and Brooklyn and Philadelphia hosted one game apiece. Presented is a rare and abundantly colorful scorecard from that series, scored neatly in fountain pen for Game 2 in New York on October 17. The game was won 3-0 by the St. Louis nine behind righthander Elton Chamberlain. The series went the distance with the New York team victorious, however, six games to four. Starring in this piece’s printed lineup for New York were Tiernan, Ewing, Richardson, Connor, Ward, O'Rourke and Welch. St. Louis featured Latham, O'Neil (sic), Comiskey, McCarthy and Lyons. The painstakingly lithographed covers picture a total of 35 men from the two teams, including the specified players plus Keefe, Gore, Mutrie and Silver King. The 7-3/4” x 6-7/8” scorecard (measuring 3-7/8” x 6-7/8” when closed) displays a handsome and nicely preserved, completely original Very Good to Excellent appearance. One small crease projects outward from the center fold into the New York design, and routine wear is concentrated, as expected, at the spine and corners. An extremely appealing relic, from a forerunner of today’s World Series!
Please Note: The date "1889" appears in print on the cover of this item, denoting the fact that the participants in the referenced postseason Series -- held in 1888 -- were at the time the reigning "1889" Champions of their respective leagues.
