Graded 50 VG/EX 4 by SGC. Presented is an Old Judge cabinet card that reveals the menacing batting pose of Boston Captain Mike Kelly. The N173 cabinets of 1888-89 represent some of the most desirable cards in our hobby. These premiums were made available to collectors only through the mail, in exchange for Old Judge coupons that could be found in cigarette packs. Mike "King" Kelly was one of baseball's earliest and most charismatic stars, and the player about whom the famous song, "Slide, Kelly, Slide," was written. A top performer on the field, he helped lead the Chicago White Stockings to five first-place finishes in a span of seven years (1880-1886). In 1887, Kelly was sold to Boston for a then-record price, resulting in his "$10,000 Beauty" nickname. The photograph on this cabinet card is of impeccable quality, exhibiting exceptional clarity and contrast, and its expanded-version caption ("Mike Kelly, C. Boston's") is comprised of crisp and well-defined letters. The 4-1/8" x 6-1/2" mount is also in remarkable condition, with a completely clean reverse, and it retains much of its original gilded border. Extremely light traces of aging and circulation can barely be seen at the mount's edges, and a tiny wrinkle can be detected at the photo's top edge; these are essentially negligible imperfections within the context of the rare piece's overall grandeur. A very striking example -- and a piece worthy of inclusion in the finest Old Judge cabinet collection -- in Very Good to Excellent condition. This lot is subject to a reserve.
