Graded NM-MT+ 8.5 by PSA, one of just two copies at its tier among more than 600 PSA-graded specimens. No example has ever been awarded a higher, unqualified grade. Presented is a showpiece example—beyond question one of the finest of its kind in the world—of a precious and universally revered Ruth collectible. The first, succinct line of the cardback's biography summarizes its subject's greatness: "Home run king of the big leagues." As tribute to this heartily avowed, undisputed sovereignty, Ruth's likeness was featured on four different 1933 Goudey cards, more than any other player. This 1933 Goudey #149, the "red background," is among the scarcest and most hotly pursued of the coveted quartet, and this particular, elite card is an incontestably superb representation of its type. On the offered card, Ruth's image is incredibly potent in its coloration, and clean, untoned white borders accentuate the painting's already formidable aesthetic qualities. The Hall of Famer's face is so richly and properly endowed with proof-like hues that the exertion of his mighty swing is translated to, and almost felt by, the viewer. The corners show miniscule hints of wear at the tips, but this clinical and unforgiving observation is borne out only through the aid of magnification. Bold green print, on a canvas of nearly pure white, characterizes the reverse. From its comfortably situated position at the most favorable extreme of PSA's grading scale, this luscious card is poised to assume a premier role in any high-end collection—and to touch the emotions of even the most worldly enthusiast. Near Mint to Mint-plus condition.
