In 1910, Darby's Chocolates of Baltimore issued a striking and extraordinarily rare package design set, with two cards featured on each box of Darby's Chocolates (one card on the front, and one on the back). Today, fewer than 100 Darby's Chocolate cards, in total, have been confirmed to exist. The offered box is one of only seven known complete Darby's Chocolate boxes, and it is the only documented example that features two Hall of Famers. (In fact, both of the player designs on the box -- Johnny Evers and Tris Speaker -- are each the only known examples of those entries from this set, in any form.) The 3-3/8" x 4-1/2" x 1" box has been carefully assembled and displays beautifully; it could be disassembled, if desired, for flat presentation. Within the context of the box’s inherent fragility, the relic shows an incredibly strong level of preservation. The piece exhibits some minor creasing and light staining. There is a small chip at the very top of the Speaker card (not affecting the design of the card), as well as a narrow, 1-1/2”-long area of paper loss along the bottom edge of the Speaker side. (If the Speaker card were to be cut out, as intended, it would be affected only minimally, if at all). There is a slight darkening stain along the left edge of Speaker side, again not significantly affecting the card. The Evers side appears cleaner and brighter, but has minor creasing and also concedes light staining. Despite the acknowledged and essentially inevitable flaws, the integrity of both cards and the box as a whole remain entirely intact, and the item maintains a fundamentally EX appearance. This survivor is exceptional on several levels: as an early baseball package design display piece, as a pair of one-of-a-kind Darby's Chocolate cards, and as the vehicle carrying significant and unique candy cards of Hall of Famers Johnny Evers and Tris Speaker.
