The year 1939 was a big one for the National Pastime. Aside from the formal dedication of the Hall of Fame, there were gala ceremonies and jubilation of every manner throughout the country. Not lost in all these festivities was an old timers event staged at Philadelphia's Shibe Park on September 10, where veterans from Connie Mack's two dynasties – the 1910 and 1929 World Champion A’s teams – were pitted against each other for the fans' adulation and amusement. In attendance at the exhibition was the first Commissioner of Baseball – without whose efforts, ironically, the sport might not have endured to celebrate its 100th Anniversary. Offered here is a unique gold memento that was awarded to this game's distinguished spectator. A size 8 jewelry piece with a "10K" stamping inside the band, the ring -- its design centered about the raised image of a swinging batter and Baseball Centennial legends and punctuated by a genuine diamond -- features "As" and the Commissioner's initials "KML" on its respective shanks. Inside the band, a lengthy personalized inscription reads, "Presented to K.M. Landis - Commissioner of Baseball - by the Philadelphia Athletics - Sept 10 1939." The ring shows natural wear at the high points, and the thin back band is somewhat distorted (perhaps fashioned in this manner to bring about a snug fit on Landis' pinkie). Accompanying the ring is a compelling and bright studio-portrait image of the baseball czar, rendered on a substantial 9" x 12" sheet of brass-colored metal (about EX/MT). Together, these two unique pieces constitute an extremely impressive commemoration of an individual whose contributions to the game's long-term success cannot be overstated.
