Judging by the players' grim expressions, you'd never suspect that this 1907 Detroit Tigers squad was the A.L. pennant winner that season for the first of three consecutive years. Perhaps some of Ty Cobb's stalwart ferocity rubbed off on his teammates. Cobb, pictured in just his third season in the Majors, is posed third from the left in the second row. He holds his bat and glove in his lap and stares ahead, virtually expressionless. Cobb's legs are outstretched, his cleats displaying the very spikes that would come to define his slashing Kamikaze style on the base paths. Manager Hughie Jennings, 17 Tigers players, a dog/mascot and a batboy accompany Ty in the original dark-sepia photograph, which measures 8" x 10" and displays overall EX/MT quality. With its vintage backing (which concedes some spotting on the back side and a repair to the top-left corner), the relic's dimensions are 10" x 12", in total. An outstanding piece – attributable to Detroit’s Fisher-Kline Co. – that boasts impeccable clarity and contrast. This lot is subject to a reserve.
