Legendary March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on: 3/2/2010

Offered is a very rare, 4-3/4" x 7-3/4" cabinet photograph depicting Hall of Fame shortstop Hans ("Honus") Wagner. The "Honus Wagner Tobacco Controversy" has been extensively documented. The great player reputedly did not want to have his name associated with any smoking products. But, besides his famous T206 card, a few other tobacco-inspired Wagner depictions slipped out—not the least of which is this magnificent T5 Pinkerton cabinet. Pinkerton cabinets are among the rarest of all 20th Century tobacco issues, and this example of Wagner – with a photo that’s unique to the Pinkerton production – is certainly one of the most sought-after portrayals. A manufacturer's wrinkle, which absolutely does not appear from the front, can be seen on the reverse side of the item's mount (which, significantly is original … not a later addition). Presentation quality of the photo is MT with “perfect 10”-caliber contrast and clarity, and the mount’s obverse appearance is NM. A legitimate cornerstone for any vintage card or photograph collection!

Please note: This card was recently presented to SGC for informal examination, and they confirmed that the card is all-original. SGC will numerically grade the piece should the winning bidder choose to submit the card to that company for professional grading.
